Greywell Moors

Greywell, near Odiham
OS Map 186, Grid Ref SU722513 (meeting place)
Client: Hampshire Wildlife Trust

This is an area of extremely rich fen lying along the upper reaches of the river Whitewater, home to rare plants such as marsh helleborine, pepper saxifrage and marsh lousewort. Years of neglect after WWII have been reversed since the trust took over the site. Much scrub and woodland clearance by HCV and others, assisted by grazing cattle, has allowed the fen to regenerate.
On the north side of the road next to the pumping station is an area of flowery grassland with restricted access.

Karen says ".. A very wet day, so difficult to get the fire going. Andy and Hugh were our brushcutting team and Bryan was managing the fire, everyone else worked very hard clearing a massive amount of scrub, but the site was cleared and all scrub finally burnt by the end of the day".

We will be clearing small scrub and brambles from the flower-rich meadows behind the pumping station. The Exmoor ponies have been doing all they can but could do with a little help.

Directions

Meet at 10am by Greywell Pumping Station. From J5 of M3 take the A287 east, getting in the outside lane and soon turning right into Hook Road towards Greywell. Turn left into Deptford Lane opposite the Fox and Goose PH, go over a bridge and turn left into the pumping station drive.
